Life’s What You Make It

“Don’t let no small frustration
Ever bring you down…
No, no, no, no!
Just take a situation
And turn it all around!..”

This is the first stanza of the song titled “Life’s what you make it”, from the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana series. My cousin asked me to download and burn that song for a classmate. I got intrigued by the title so I searched for its lyrics. This may be sang by a 14 year old and its melody appeals to the young genre, but the simple lyrics speak no boundaries and ages. That’s what life is, what you make of it. Simple but profound.

I remembered the poem, Invictus, written by William Ernest Henley that we have to interpret back in 4th year high school. I know most of my highschool friends would be delighted to read that poem again, and remember our dear English teacher, Ma’am Vi, so I have put the poem at the bottom of this post. The most memorable part of this Henley poem, is of course, the last stanza which says, “…I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” It is true, we are the driver of our lives.

Each of our lives is a gift, but how we use and appreciate it is entirely up to us. Our lives may be full of struggles, but it is in our hands to change everything. There may be lots of uncontrollable things that come our way, but the major influence in our lives is still us. God gave to us our lives, but we are the ones who are holding our own steering wheel. We have our own free will to decide where the journey of our lives will take us.

Life is all about making choices on how we experience the world, and we are the one who decide what we want to create in our lives. Whatever we are having in our lives now, we should realize that we still have our life, and we still have tomorrow, our future. And the most important thing is, we can still choose. THE MAJOR INFLUENCE IN YOUR LIFE IS YOU!

INVICTUS
By WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY (1849-1903)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
