Finding Serenity

Serenity (pic taken from http://www.lifeiswhatyoumakeofit.com/)

Amidst the buzz of everyday life, having a serene life - free from stress and anxieties - is a luxury. Sometimes it is so hard for us to find peace or have some peace of mind. Wouldn’t it be so nice if we will be given enough time to just forget all our troubles, problems and worries, and enjoy a few moments of serenity and inner calmness? I don’t mean we should all go to a vacation, or go somewhere else, but I think we should all learn to find calmness in times of troubles.

Contradicting, isn’t it? In the first place, peace and trouble are opposite words, arent’t they? So how do we find peace when we are troubled and lots of things are going around our head? I have listed down some tricks, or should I say, strategies I usually use to keep me sane during troubled moments. Hey, I am no life guru, but these things get me going during sticky situations…

1. BE OPTIMISTIC. I think the first thing we should do is be very optimistic of everything, and realize that all things happen for a reason. We should always have a positive perspective of life, despite all the storms coming our way. My mantra, THIS TOO, SHALL PASS…

2. SMILE. Pulling off a smile when you’re thinking of problems is hard, especially when we’re thinking about our troubles all the times. But this is what I try to do every morning before i get up, I try to smile as wide as I can, and be grateful for the new day. Smiling gives me more strength to get up and face the new day.

3. TAKE A SHOWER. It’s the therapy of water I guess, that gives me some time of peace because when I take a shower, I feel as if all my woes are washed down to the drain. Or when I want to cry my heart out, I just let the water wash away all my tears, and the minute I step out of the shower, I am lightened up.

4.HUG MY KIDS. Getting strength from the kids are the best thing to do, i think. When I have some worries, I ask my kids to hug me, and I draw strength from them. Then when they are fast asleep, I just marvel at them and can’t help the feeling of peace - it’s like passing their serene aura to me.

5. PRAY. When all things seem to be out of our control, and we are deeply troubled, we should just keep our faith to Him. As for me, during troubled times, I go to the Adoration Chapel as often as I can because when I feel so close to the Tabernacle, I feel peace and I can pour all my worries to Him. But when I can’t go there, I just recite JESUS over and over (more like humming His name over and over) until I feel calm.

I have read from somewhere that most often, our lack of peace results simply from the absence of God in our lives. Knowing Him brings out an inner peace because we become more aware of his faithfulness and that He is always in control. There is always hope after the storm. Just like what is said in John 16:32-33 - “…Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

So let’s just always try to smile and be positive! Life will be more beautiful if you’re happy!!! To end this post, I am sharing with you the Serenity Prayer.

SERENITY PRAYER

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

- Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8
