Never give up

“…this is the lesson: Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

Those words were part of Winston Churchill speech in 1941 to the students of his old school, the Harrow School in Britain. There are numerous myths about that famous Churchill’s speech. Some versions say, he stood before the students and just said, “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give in. Never give in. Never give in. Never give in,” then sat down afterwards. Actually, Churchill gave a complete speech and the famous quote was just part of it.

There are also some versions that says, Never give up. Back in college, I really thought that this was the actual Churchill quote. Nevertheless, I so loved it that I actually wrote “Never, never, never give up” on a papemelroti paper and posted on my “bedwall”. Yes, bedwall, not bedroom wall. I was sharing the room with other 6 beautiful girls, hehe, and that’s where we cook, eat and study! My only refuge was my own bed, the lower one of a steel double-bed, like those beds in a military barracks! That’s where I study (yes, I didn’t have my own table but sometimes I borrow my boardmates’ study board) and hanged my clothes and uniforms at the footbed.

Hehe, nice life! Nothing to complain though, because I wouldn’t exchange my boardmates for anything!!! Yes, you could consider our boarding haus dingy but the boarders there were all wonderful (including me, and did I say all of us were pretty?hehe). Oh well, I miss those days na madaling araw pa lang we had to line up our tabo sa labas ng C.R. para unahan sa pagligo, kasi magiigib na ng tubig pag tanghali na. And since ang koryente namin don naka-jumper lang, most of the times na walang ilaw, we would go to the Intramuros walls, sa harap ng Manila Bulletin. Coz there, maliwanag ang ilaw ng poste, then pwede na kami mag-aral. Fresh air pa,hehe, unlike in our room na mainit, we only had to share 2 electric fans.

Our weekly cuisine would include many days of pandesal and pansit canton, ginisang sardinas, and fried galunggong (na binili ng tumpok sa Quinta market, nilakad lang mula Intramuros hanggang Quiapo). But hey, those were happy times and most of us stayed there til graduation.

Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful, does it? Our dreams started there in that shabby boarding house, and despite some failures, many disagreements, and other personal struggles, most of us become successful in our own ways. We all never gave up to each of our own battles - even up to now.
