Good things come in 3s
![]()
I just realized after writing my last entry Three Red Marbles, that there’s truth about the old adage, “All good things come in threes.” This axiom also has an opposite, which says, bad things come in threes, too. Being an optimist, I’d rather settle on the good things. Shouldn’t we all?My other earlier posts were The Tale of Three Trees and MEME#1:3 things I won’t let go. I didn’t mean to write three entries about threes (hehe, sorry about the little tongue twister). Technically this is the 4th entry, though i hope you found ‘good things’ in my earlier three posts.
So what is this ‘rule of three’ about?According to the web, the rule of three is based on the technique that people tend to remember three things. Even in writing, based on Wikipedia, the rule of three is a principle that suggests things that come in threes are inherently funnier, more satisfying, or more effective than other numbers of things. So how common is this rule of three used in many instances? I listed some examples:
- The Holy Trinity
- three crosses in Cavalry
- Jesus rose from the dead after 3 days
- Jonah was three days inside the belly of a giant fish
- faith-hope-love
- 3 wise men
- 3 stoogies
- 3 little pigs
- 3 musketeers
- 3 bears in Goldilocks
- 3 godmothers in Sleeping Beauty
- 3 blind mice
- 3 Gs - guns-gold-glory
- yesterday-today-tomorrow
- beginning-middle-end
- past-present-future
- small-medium-large
- tic-tac-toe
- strike 3
- race countdown:1-2-3GO!; also 1-2-3 smile! or cheese (while posing for pics)
- adjective forms: positive (i.e. big), comparative (bigger), and superlative (biggest)
- measurements: length-width-height
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy
- Spiderman 1-3
- the good, the bad and the ugly
- blind-deaf-mute (see no evil-hear no evil-speak no evil)
I don’t really know the origin of this rule of three, can’t find anything in the web either. Well, now I was wondering if me and my husband applied this rule coz I got 3 beautiful kids, same as my parents who got me and my other 2 siblings. Just some musing…
The world is filled with the proverbs and acts and winkings of a base prudence, which is a devotion to matter, as if we possessed no other faculties than the palate, the nose, the touch, the eye and ear; a prudence which adores the Rule of Three, which never subscribes, which never gives, which seldom lends, and asks but one question of any project,–Will it bake bread?~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think it’s mainly to do with the Holy Trinity. That’s very powerful.
