OPPOSITES: A time for everything

Live life to the fullest

Yesterday, while I was having my morning coffee, I just randomly turned and read some pages of my bible, highlighting some verses as I browse. The bible I was reading is rather new, it’s not the pocket bible I got since college, plus it’s a different version from the old one. When my husband Albert went home for vacation this summer, we bought an identical pair of bibles - one for him and one for me. On our way to the airport for his departure, we exchanged sweet dedications written on each bible’s first page.

So I consider my bible very special because I get to see Albert’s sweet note everytime I open it.Anyways, as I flipped through the pages, I chanced upon Ecclesiastes Verse 3, titled, ‘A Time for Everything.’ I already have highlighted the whole verse from a previous reading so I just read it again. It talks about God’s timing for everything - and everything is beautiful in its time. What I had noticed is that the whole verse talks about all the opposite ‘episodes’ in a man’s life: birth and dying, love and hate, war and peace, and so on.

Just the night before, I was teaching my second child Miguel his lesson in Language: opposites. Of course, their lesson is just the basics: big and small, thin and thick, long and short, fat and thin, etc. However, reading that verse again made me think - LIFE IS FULL OF OPPOSITES. God puts us all into these opposite situations in His own appropriate time for the right reasons He only knows why. However, what really hit me is the realization that God tests us in order for us to glorify Him, and though we have lots of burdens and questions in our minds about the past and our future, we should enjoy life! Therefore, whatever opposites we are experiencing today, it’s because NOW is the right time for us to have them. We can never know the future, only Him knows that. Yet there are only two things we should do – be happy and trust HIM! Isn’t that enough comfort? So let’s live life to the fullest!

ECCLESIASTES 3:1-14, 20, 22

1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

9 What does the worker gain from his toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him…

20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return…

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?
