Good in the Bad Old World

Good News Bad News (Source:http://www.essex1.com/people/paul/goodnbn2.gif)

I wish to share with you this January 1 entry on the 1972 Friendship Book of Francis Gay. The message is simple: even though bad things are given emphasis and reported each day - in radio, tv, newspapers, and via internet - good things are still happening out there. Yes, there are lots of negativities in this world, even the most disturbing ones - terrorism, murder, death and lots of suffering. However, even if most media news highlight these dark areas of humanity, there are also positive things that balances them, albeit not given the exposure.

Since the year has just began, we should start to look at the world on a different perspective and appreciate more the good things that are, too, happening. Hope we learn a thing or two from this post:

Saturday - January 1 (1972).

Any radio or TV producer, any experienced editor, will tell you that, as a rule, good news is never as exciting as bad.

A vessel may come safely to port ninety-nine times, and there is no reporter at the quayside to comment, no pictures broadcast, no song and dance. But if a ship limps home after a fire in her hold or a collision, that is news!

One obvious result of this is that many of us may get a depressing view of life. We are continually hearing bad news, disturbing news, news which conveys the impression that everywhere there is ugliness, wickedness, suffering and cruelty.

But if you pause to think for a moment only, you will realize that this is not a true picture. The fact is, for every couple divorced there are a host of happily-married folk.

For every accident on the road there are many journeys safely accomplished. For every young thug there are decent, friendly, clean-living and high-minded young people doing a good job and using their time wisely.

We are apt to lose sight of this truth; and it seems to me that New Year is a good time to remind ourselves that in this bad old world there is still a great deal of good.
