HELIOTROPIUM
I found this nice poem titled Heliotropium from my little book, The Road of Life. Heliotropium is an ancient form of sunflower that constantly turned its face toward the sun. Roman writer Pliny wrote about this ancient plant:
“I have often spoken of the wonderful property of the heliotrope, which turns itself round with the sun, even on a cloudy day, so great is its love of that luminary. But at night it closes its azure flower, as if from missing its rays.”
Hence, like the heliotrope, we should constantly turn toward God - in whatever direction He may want us to be. We should be faithful and conforming to the will of God, which is represented by the sun. The key to our happiness and life contentment is the conviction that God has a will for us, which we should discover, and thereafter put our own will in conformity with God’s Holy Will.
HELIOTROPIUM
Dear Lord, let me not venture forth,
If you would have me stay,
May all I do be done for You,
In Your own time and way.
Rid my heart of vain desires,
Save those which lead to You,
Nor find me guilty of an act
That is not good and true.
Permit me not o be disturbed,
By that which soon will pass,
And may it be Your face I see,
Within my looking glass.
Rid me of all distractions,
That threaten inner peace,
Calm the storm within my soul,
And bid the thunder cease.
Press Your Will against my own,
‘Til only Yours remains,
Teach me to welcome all You send,
The pleasures and the pains.
Fill me with an inner fire,
Consuming with its glow,
And make the words, “Thy will be done,”
…The only ones I know.

Hi Maline - that’s a lovely poem. It seems very familiar (some verses, anyway), and I’m wondering if I came across it as a child somewhere. Do you know how old it is?

I believe that I was led to this post of yours. It’s like a reminder of what I should always believe and remember. Life can get so tough sometimes and I forget that He always has something better planned. Thank you for the reminder.

The sunflower is one of my favourite flowers: it’s beautiful, it’s sturdy, it’s refreshing and very useful. I also love the fact that it follows the sun.
