New Entrecard Tactics

I bet many Entrecard users are surprised with the new pricing of advertisements on Entrecard member blogs. FYI for non-bloggers or not users yet, Entrecard is a blog advertising network, which I think is a must-have for all blogs! Anyways, Entrecard was down yesterday noon (Manila time) due to upgrade so when I logged in last night and saw the new prices and price computation for campaigns I was a bit confused. Before, prices of adverts are based on popularity or average number of drops per day, but now prices are based on the number of ads waiting for the entrecard spot. How adverts are priced? The system will go like this:

Entrecard prices

So the more number of new adverts waiting, the more expensive each spot becomes. Based on this factorial system, how expensive many blogs have become? The highest price so far this morning reached 262,144 entrecard credits per day! How long before I could reach that much ec so I can advertise on the top spot? So assuming I earn 600 ec per day (from personal 300 drops and hoping all those 300 counter-dropped), to reach that 262,144 ec, I need more than 436 days! Is that price worth it?

Entrecard expensive spots

Here are some of my rants about the new entrecard pricing ploy:

  1. Yes, entrecard is a great blog advertising network and it’s a good way to increase a blog’s traffic, plus I really appreciate the continuous system upgrade.  But the new advert pricing is preposterous and extreme! At least, they are right and they even warned the advertisers - TOO EXPENSIVE!
  2. Let say, I earned that enough entrecard credits to advertise on the most expensive spot worth 262,144 ec, how many drops will I earn back from that? 20? 50? 100? 200 drops? Do you think that huge advertising ec cost is worth the rate of return?
  3. Having said that, I prefer the original pricing of advertisements that’s based on the popularity of blogs. I am sure, most blogs who belonged to the top 30 popular sites and even those who are slowly gaining popularity, are working so hard to reach their respective spots.
  4. I have nothing against those blogs who now have the most expensive ec price, I know they are all great, especially problogger (which is one of my influences/inspirations in blogging). I just think the new entrecard pricing system is over the top.

I hope this new system of Entrecard pricing is just on a trial run and will go back to the original advert pricing, or have a more reasonable computation. Ooops, before I forget, at the bottom of the entrecard advert pricing system, you’ll see this message:

If I apply at 1024ec, and the user declines some of the ads ahead of me in the queue, do I get a partial refund?

No :)

It’s clear: No more refund if you get ahead of the advert line! So you just wasted your precious, hard-earned, entrecard credits!

Well, that’s just my point of view, I dunno if my fellow bloggers share the same sentiments. What do you think?

I think the new pricing system is plain terrible. -_-

    The old system is better.

If they really want to change it, a Project Wonderful type approach would be much better.

Yes but the fact is that no-one can afford it. In a few days time the when there’s less adverts queued the costs will go down, The whole system will set itself right simply by the efforts of the community in the next few days.

I’m sorry I am one of the most expensive cards. I can’t even afford myself! Honestly, I don’t know what I did to be so expensive. I try to drop 300 cards a day, but that’s all I’ve done. I don’t like the new pricing system, and I don’t like the limit of 600ecs a day. If the over-regulate Entrecards, they’ll kill it. They have to keep it fun!

I hate the new system, but will stick it out for a while longer because it has allowed me to discover so many wonderful blogs and has garnered a lot of loyal readers for my blog but I can’t afford to advertise anymore (I tended toward placing ads on blogs that advertised on my blog) and I think the new system is skewered towards the big “lets make a million dollars on the internet” crowd and away from those who are blogging out of a sense of passion or fun.

  17. Thriell Says:

You’re right in that nobody can afford 262,144ec for an ad. But…

Because nobody can afford that, by the next day, those same spots will cost 131,072. When nobody buys at that price, the next day it drops to 65,536. The price will cut in half every day that nobody buys an ad. In a week, those spots should be affordable.

I don’t think it’s fair for people to say “I’d have to drop 300 cards a day for a year” because, unless people are ponying up the 262,144ec for an ad every day, the price can’t stay that high for a year.

I say give it a week and see what happens. Right now it’s still recovering from the changeover. You wouldn’t sue your doctor because you had surgery and your incision still hurt the next morning, would you?

I was shocked too to see the statistics there. I am not good in math so I really never understood it. I understand very little about entrecard other than it brings me traffic for my new blog and that’s it. Now to buy advertising for 1m is a bit too much, they may need to come up with a new formulae as I really do not understand the whole purpose of advertising any where any more.

The new system is awful and greatly miscalculated. If that is the case, then we each should get 100 credits per site for dropping our cards.

I just sold an ad for 512 which was a bit more than under the old system - normally I was 350-400. I think it will be interesting to see how the new pricing shakes out after a week or so. I think the doubling formula works quite well initially but it does get to ridiculous levels after a while … still no one in their right mind’s going to fork out 200k ec’s for an ad, so it will ultimately settle down to levels people are actually willing to pay. I think this will be quite interesting actually.

Unfortunately I still don’t like the new system. I tried buying an ad that was supposed to cost 512 ec. So I clicked on the advertise link and waited…and waited…and waited. Finally the site refreshed and updated so I could click the accept button and after I did that I realized that I just been charged 1,024 ec!!! It had doubled in price from the time I clicked advertise (and waited forever) and approve. :( I was ticked! That was almost ALL of my credits. It took me awhile to earn all of them too. If it says 512 when I click it should stay that way. I was not happy.
